Pied-billed Grebe & Chicks

Pied-billed Grebes are small diving birds that can be found year round at the wetlands. They enjoy feeding on small fish and amphibians. Pied-billed grebe chicks often leave the nest quickly, sometimes as soon as one day. As they do not swim well at first, young chicks can be seen hitching a ride on the back one their parents. The chicks seen on this day (last year) were most likely a few weeks old and were learning to forage on their own.

We are going to be in the Orlando area for a few days next week (visiting family) I am hoping to break away for an afternoon of birding. Do you have any suggestions as to where I might have the best opportunities during a very brief visit?

    1. Hi Tammy,
Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge is a great to visit. It is less than an hour from Orlando. There is a great drive (Blackpoint Drive, which is $5) that offers lots of places to stop and observe as well as some places for short walks. It's probably most active in the early morning or later afternoon. You will pass over a large bridge after you cross US 1, I often stop there to see what's in that area as well. In Orlando, there are lots of parks that have great birding opportunities. Check out www.floridabirdingtrail.com (east section) and it gives info about tons of small places around Orlando. Have a great trip! I look forward to your photos!

    1. Hola Tomas, It is nice and hot in August! There are plenty of the resident Florida birds around, but not migrant visitors at that time. It is usually a bit slower here at that time.
